Is the art market a boon for artists?

As a relatively new practitioner of art, I find myself asking this question to myself again and again. The plus point here is definitely bigger and better bucks, which it seems the artists of times gone by could never really imagine. Then there is this huge line of people who try to open up galleries, present themselves as art dealers and skin these artists wanting to make it big. The end result is pretty chaotic. At one side you have these slightly experienced artists, doing all sorts of stunts and asking for funny money. There was this installation art show that I went to- the artist had worked with his daughter, and there were these drawings by this little kid in pastels- priced at Rs. 4000.00 and Rs. 8000.00.

Mostly, the bunch with lesser skill has a lot of money...... or maybe its the people with money developing a desire to toy with art. The end result is that any gallery you visit with the idea of having a show puts forth a sky high rent for the gallery space, an equally high commission that they are gonna charge per sales. Ask them for the services they provide....... hey, lets not discuss services- it makes art sound too business like!

There are these artists who make their kids put up their drawings at a high price under the name of art. There are these elite class hobby artists who sell their canvases for a super cheap price. There are these galleries who are concerned with nothing but their cuts and all the money that they can get.

How and what does a person with a desire to paint and express through colors, line and form; Wanting to make a living by his creations- and a hope to be remembered as an artist do?
